Ven Johnson Addresses Boating Safety on TV20 WMYD Detroit

It’s the season for enjoying everything our great lakes have to offer. Unfortunately, when we’re out exploring, we can forget that the rules of the “road” apply to “water,” too. Should an accident happen do you know what to do? Ven has some helpful advice that’s good to be aware of—just in case. Check him out on TV20 WMYD Detroit.

What to do if you’re in a boating accident:

  1. First and foremost, determine if there are any injuries and if anyone needs medical attention on your boat or the other boat involved. People in an emergency and in need of Coast Guard assistance should use: VHF-FM Channel 16 (156.8 MHz) or dial 911.
  2. Once everyone is safe, the captains of each boat should exchange the following information: name, address, telephone number, name of the boat & registration number, insurance company & policy number. It will be helpful to exchange the name and phone numbers of any passengers onboard each boat as well. They are considered witnesses in the accident.
  3. Just like you would in a car accident, take photos of any damage to the boat and any visible injuries to passengers.
  4. File a boating accident report with the Coast Guard and any other necessary local agencies.
